Mulching tips
Tips for Mulching offers many benefits including weed control, protection of landscaped plants and flowers and making a yard look neat and well organized.
Mid to late spring is the best time to put down mulch. This allows the soil to warm from winter and will encourages plant growth.
Choose the proper mulch size use smaller pieces like cypress and oak for small beds of annuals. Larger, heavier sizes like pine bark nuggets are best for slopes or areas with high wind or water run off.
First, rid the area of weeds and then water existing plants.
Cover the ground with landscaping fabric. This is optional, but will provide greater weed control, while allowing water and nutrients through to the plants.
Scatter mulch evenly until it is 3 inches thick. Too much mulch can kill new plantings. You can always add more later. Allow 1 - 2 inches of space around trees or woody stems. This will keep bark from rotting and keep garden pests away from bark.
